With the colder months well and truly here, accompanying the frosty air is the dreaded cold and flu. Sadly, it’s something we can’t cure but there are some little things you can do to not only keep it from getting worse and making you feel significantly better and more human-like.

Rest Up
Yup. I’m telling you to sleep for a little longer, wrap up and binge watch The Walking Dead or Netflix and chill (But, you know, actually watch Netflix and relax..;)) The less energy you need to function, the more energy your body can use to help you get better.


A Nice Steamy Shower
When I’m ill, the only thing I want to do is lie in bed feeling sorry for myself. But when you’re all congested the best thing you can do is have a nice hot steamy shower. Not only does it make you feel significantly more human but it will help clear up your chest and nose.

Get ‘Leaving The House’ Ready
Now, I’m not saying you need to get all dressed up but join the land of the living and get dressed. Even just some comfy leggings and an oversized t-shirt with a fresh face and messy bun. You’ll feel much more human-like and, as a result, be much more productive.

Gargle Salt Water
When I have a sore throat or even when I feel it coming on, I like to gargle some salt water. Yes, it tastes bad and yes, I’d rather be in bed but the relief it provides my throat makes it all worth it. I just take a cup of warm water add a teaspoon of salt and gargle it three to four times a day.


Hot Drinks
Not only are hot drinks really comforting when you’re sick but they also benefit you a lot. Hot liquids will help keep you hydrated and help relieve nasal congestion. I love hot lemon and honey. Just squeeze a lemon into a cup of hot water and add a teaspoon or two of Manuka honey (a type of honey from New Zealand famous for it’s anti-bacterial and healing properties). Delicious!

This post has come at the right time as I have been bunged up since Friday 😦 My wife made me a fantastic drink, which has really helped me to feel better: she peeled some oranges, lemons and limes, popped them in a pan, added sugar and cloudy lemonade, and heated it all up until it was lovely and warm. It tastes delicious! And such a boost of vitamin C as you end up eating the flesh of the fruits. It’s a bit like warm marmalade in a cup, but with no toast sadly! We are going to invest in a hand blender and we can make it again as a preventative drink, rather than a curative one 🙂
