These days, we can sometimes feel a little overwhelmed by the extensive amount of skincare products available to us. There’s some sort of lotion or potion available for any skin concern or complaint we may have. But how do we know what’s right for us and our skin? Since working as a Makeup Artist, I’ve discovered the biggest confusion clients have is about what skin type they have, which means finding products to suit their skin type like finding a needle in a hay stack. So today I thought I’d help out a bit by explaining some of the key characteristics of each skin type and even created a handy dandy quiz at the end to help you figure out your skin type.
NORMAL
-Not too dry, not too oily
– No or few imperfections
– No severe sensitivity
-Barely visible pores
-A radiant complexion
Having normal skin means you don’t need to do as much to your skin to maintain it. However using gentle, effective products that will prevent sun damage and reduce signs of aging is still a good idea.
COMBINATION
-Dry/Normal in some areas, Oily in other
-Overly dilated pores
-Blackheads
-Shiny Skin
Having combination skin may require you to use different types on skincare on the different areas of your face. For example, using lightweight gels in the t-zone with richer creams on the drier areas of your face.
DRY
-Almost invisible pores
-Dull/rough complexion
-Red patches
-Less elasticity
-More visible lines.
For dry skin, you first want to make sure you aren’t using products that will further dry out your skin, such as soaps, abrasive scrubs or using products with alcohol, mint or fragrance. Make sure your applying sunscreen daily to prevent further drying and apply hydrating serums, gels and moisturizer as often as possible.
OILY
-Enlarged pores
-Dull or shiny, thick complexion
-Blackheads, spots or other blemishes.
For oily skin, finding a good cleanser is important to avoid your oils clogging up your pores causing blackheads and blemishes. Many creams and lotions may be too rich and thick for your oily skin so liquids, serums or gels will be much lighter on the skin.
SENSITIVE
-Redness
-Itching
-Burning
-Dryness.
With sensitive skin, it’s so important to try to find out what triggers the sensitivity, so you can avoid it in future products. But generally as a rule, avoid abrasive scrubs or products containing alcohol, mint or fragrance and test all new products on a small, hidden area first!
